1996 xj
Re: 1996 xj
Installed a new Clayton's track bar. Much beefier it has a bonded metal bushing on one end and a huge jj on the other.
We went to Adventure offroad park in South Pittsburg, TN great park mostly setup more for larger rigs and buggies not jeeps on 35s. I gave it my best shot. A lot of body damage, one broke shaft, one twisted shaft, and finally a busted tie rod end at the pitman arm ended my weekend. It was a great time.

Those are some big rocks... Looks like a fun park!
Re: 1996 xj
Trip to Slade, KY always a good time. Before the trip I went thru the front axle and put in the warrantied ten factory shafts, a steering stabilizer, and gave it a decent tape measure alignment.

I actually still drives decent down the road. Getting to the point it needs some loving. Core support is tweaked and causing some issues, only 2 doors work, only 2 have glass, and no taillights anymore.

Pretty sure this guy got some new tail lights..... Let's see em!
Re: 1996 xj
New taillight boxes. 14 gauge, I welded them straight to the body. XJ's are wired kind of weird they use one bulb per function stop, turn, brake. Most people use trailer wiring converters I just used 3 lights, plus one for reverse. Didn't see the need for leds except the reverse that I couldn't find in non-led white.keepviper13 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:35 amPretty sure this guy got some new tail lights..... Re: 1996 xj
I took a deposit on the jk today. Most of it is being used responsibly for the business, but say I have $6 to 7k to spend on the xj this winter. Where does it go.
My thoughts and some back ground:
-I'm happy with the xj my only issue that bugs me is the lack of ground clearance with the tires at 4-6psi. Great traction but any ruts and I am hung up on the diffs. I'd really like to run a 37-39" inch tire.
-Got had a chance to go on two "ultimate adventure" type trips this year, not the real one, but ones put on by known 4x4 shops. I'd like to be able to. Two things stopped me this year; rear drive line/t-case need addressed and while I did a ton of work to try and tame the ltb's steering is still a hand full at anything over 45mph or so.
- I'd like to keep the 8.8 I have some money in it, the arb works great and it has been flawless so far I think it will hold up to 37-38" tires
- I'd like to leave the rear suspension alone. Yeah leaf springs, but I spent a bunch of time getting the shackles right. It has 12" of travel currently limited before by drive shaft bind, no wheel hop. Moving the rear axle back means major rework of the fuel tank skid and rear storage area.
-T-case needs attention; chain slop, leaking rear output, really needs an sye and cv-shaft to run higher speeds. Not big on putting money in the 231 but also not big on major floor mods.
-Engine and trans seem healthy
-Shorts arms in the front can't take any more lift without addressing angles
My thoughts:
-Late model mopar jk 44 front axle for the ring and pinion strength and aftermarket, use adapters on the rear to run 5 x 5 jk bolt pattern hopefully find used and stay around $3k after going through all of it.
-Bite the bullet and buy an atlas (~$2400) have it for the rest of my life
-Some kind of long arm for the front with decent quality joints, this one is a whole other discussion but say $1000 with 5.5" springs
That is most of the budget and i'd still need to address drive lines, steering, and wheels/tires. Yeah I will get a bit of money for my dana 30 and current wheels/tires
Before you say $400 junkyard dana 60 remember it will have to be rebuilt, re-geared, locked, steering, adapted to current suspension, address bolt pattern and rear axle.

Re: 1996 xj
I had a Clayton long arm kit and really liked it. It was beefy and quite from the johnny joints. I still have most of the kit after I swapped out the front axle if you wanted it. I also have nearly new 5.5" springs from Rustys.

Re: 1996 xj
I'm pretty sure 5.5" springs for a tj well net way more lift in an xj than you want. Thinking that while the suspension is identical, the spring length between the two is not...
Re: 1996 xj
Looks like the 5.5" TJ front is the same part number as a 6.5" XJ front on Rusty's website. I'll have to dig out all the springs and check part numbers, but makes sense.
